Takbo Maharlika run in Cebu

TM's Cebu Run with the CPNP. A run jived with PDG Nicanor Bartolome's call to Bishop Joe Palma. About 500 PNP, AFP and civilian runners started at 3 different ppints merging at the finish line, the Mandaue Sports Center. TM team joined C, PNP in the 5k run with General George Piano, General Ric Marquez and other senior officers joining us too. Fr Melo again by divine arrangements,we believe, was able to lead the prayers in the 5k and 7k starting areas where most of runners were. The rain came before the run, stopped when we started the run and resumed when we reached the finished line. No incidences we believe. A forum, quickly followed after again giving Fr Melo time to talk about TM. Mayor Cortez of also Mandaue graced the occasion. The cap of the day was the personal visit of the CPNP and the other generals to Bishop Joe Palma. Very fruitful side trip/run to Cebu indeed. 1,572 kms as of this run. Misa de Gallo starts tommorow. TM will give way to the LORD. See you in January. :)

We had the WBY fun run last Saturday 8 October. Again, the run featured the partnership between Dilaab and the PNP and AFP. The run hopes to show that we are serious about our outreach to youth in partnership with these two government agencies. This was a follow-through to our fun run last April 9. Whatever funds may be raised (i.e. registration and singlet sales) will go to our scholarship funds. We have designed a one-year initiation-formation framework for youth and now in the process of applying this. Prayers please.

Dilaab Annual Meeting to plan for the directions of the new decade. Dilaab has an External and Internal Program, as well as an Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) arm.

The External Program has two components:

1. the Heroic Christian Citizenship and Leadership Program (HCCLP) which we are popularizing as “Pwede Pala Pinoy”

2. the Benedict XVI Institute for Pastoral Accompaniment (BIPA).

HCCLP has four initiatives:

1. 4Ps (outreach to PNP)

2. CiDE (circles of discernment for elections and terms of office)

3. Advocacy and Risk Taking (promoting culture of truthtelling)

4. Wanna BET? Youth (helping young people discover themselves in the context of a wider family).

BIPA provides knowledge and skills training for public servants and their companions.

The Internal Program includes organizational development, resource mobilization, and admin and finance.

Emping is the bass guitarist and the vocalist of a Cebuano band “Assembly Language”. He is a Computer Engineering graduate from Cebu Institute of Technology University and member of FILSCAP (Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), an association that administer the public performance, mechanical reproduction and synchronization rights granted by law to creators and owners of original musical works. He promotes Cebuano music (“Bisrock”) and one of the “Bisrock Allstars” who sang in the album “Nasud Ko” which talks about the 12 little things Filipinos can do for the country.

Cshe is a simple girl from Antipolo, Rizal, who has a great passion for helping. She is a psychology graduate from the University of the Philippines Cebu College and a project assistant of Dilaab Foundation Inc. She loves music and art.

“Hi! Di Ka Nag-iisa” is a song by Simplicio “Emping” Q. Kiskisan Jr., a member of a Cebuano band, Assembly Language; with lyrics by Cshe Sanchez a project assistant of Dilaab Foundation, a faith-impelled, volunteer-driven, and church-based movement that aims to ignite space of hope by providing accompaniment for God-fearing public servants by discerning, God-fearing citizens in the journey towards integrity.

The song is an expression of faith, hope, and support for the country’s truth-tellers, especially Mrs. Heidi Mendoza. It also promotes the values of patriotism, integrity and unity among Filipinos.

The last part of the song includes words from different Filipino tongues which all means "continue": padayon (Cebuano); ituloy mo (Ilokano with accent on second syllable); isundo (Kapampangan); porsigue (Chabacano); lanjal (Tausug), ipagpadagos (Bicolano) and itaros (Maranao).

BET stands for Bible, Exercise and Tubig (or Bibliya, Ehersisyo at Tubig). The line that attracts me most during the two days Emerging Pinoy Leaders Congress held at Genesis Valley, Cabangahan Consolacion Cebu. As one of the young ones who make up 30% of the population of the Philippines, what could I do to make this place a better place to live in? That is why i am attracted with the line a tag above because it made me realize that i cannot be an instrument of change if i could not even provide direction to myself.

The two days experienced in the congress made me feel how big is our role in this society. :)

My running mentor and pastoral companion, kuya samson tucay, a retired member of pma class 1978, arranged that i celebrate mass before the catholic pma cadets last sunday 21 nov 2010. we talked about Jesus being the ultimate commander in chief (feast of Christ the King).

After mass, we joined the cadet in their sunday run. the hilly terrain of the camp and the thin air made it quite a challenge. i am glad i had no illusions about competing with the young cadets. came in last and, by God's grace, still in one piece. praise the Lord!

Having brought no camera, i requested our pma friends to send some file photos, which you are viewing.

This was not my first visit to the pma. the first one was actually in 1979 when my group and i stayed for nearly 3 days. but that is another story...

Meanwhile, let us pray for the cadets, and the pma teachers and administration.

Youths from different organizations met in Saint Theresa’s College (STC), Cebu City for the Circles of Discernment (CiDE) seminar workshop. Twenty seven participants who attended the event last March 22, 2010 came from STC while the others were from the Salesians Youth Movement, and Education students of USC.

The STC youth group has already made series of Voters’ education and seminars to other organizations. With the inputs that they have learned from the CiDE workshop, the group realized to induce the elements of Spirituality and formation of practical conscience to their voters’ education module; since these elements are pivotal components to equip their future participants with the right know-how on the electoral process, and at the same time, equip them with the right mechanism and approach towards discerning for the right political candidates.

Vote God

I must confess I was not exactly comfortable when I first heard the proposed name to our election campaign: “Vote God.” It sounded so out of this world and maybe even escapist. Yet, as the communication expert on the other side of the table handed over a piece of paper with these two words inscribed in it, I saw a man saw serenely convinced about the campaign name.

Then it slowly dawned on me. If Philippine elections and politics, as the Catholic bishops had written in 1997, “systematically exclude” our Christian values, then we indeed need to choose God and the way of God during elections. So: “Vote God.”

My appreciation for this choice has since deepened. These two words capture succinctly where we presently stand as a movement by mirroring where we have been and where we are moving. “Vote God” is about an election initiative with God as choice.

God, for sure, is not running for office and no single individual or even group can claim monopoly of God. But God is in all of us, through an embedded voice in the depths of human hearts. To obey this voice is to choose God and the way of God. The challenge is the many voices competing with this voice. It takes moral and spiritual discernment to sift through these voices; also moral, even spiritual, courage to choose good and reject evil.

“Vote God” takes its cue from the remarks of a woman who had attended the first CiDE (circles of discernment for elections) seminar in a Cebu parish last year. Earlier during the day, she expressed despondency over politicians and elections. Yet, at the end of the day she reversed her view: “We can still do something about elections. Next year, I will ask all the local candidates: ‘Do you have God fearing?’”

Last Monday, it was the 40th day after the death of Mr. Ernie Aboitiz, one of Dilaab trustee. Cardinal Vidal was celebrating the mass of which the homily as usual is so inspiring. I believe that on this day the spirit of the dead finally leaves this earth and begins the long journey to heaven.

We prepared a simple merienda binignit, sandwich... We named "Sir Ernie Aboitiz Wing" of one of our office..

TGIF!!!

Last 15-16 February 2010, the CiDE team (Fr. Melo, Tony Pineda, Tess Tejero and I) in Cebu went to St. Peter Parish in Commonwealth Ave. Quezon City for CiDE Trainers' Training. There was a total of 52 participants. The participants were representatives from the Diocese of Novaliches, the Diocese of Caloocan and the Diocese of Cubao.

Towards the end of the seminar, the participants did some action planning. One of the things that they are planning to do is to spread the LASER Questions, which they have shortened and translated in tagalog.

Special thanks to Fr. Tony Labiao, AC Wilson and the St. Peter Parish staff! We surely had a great time there.

This is Fr. Jess of Kidapawan. Thanks for the update of CiDE activities. Here in North Cotabato, particularly in the Cathedral parish of Kidapawan, our team who attended in Cebu last Feb 1-3, facilitated CiDE trainor's training in two separate groups. First, it was on Feb. 6 to all our Lay ministers [about 60 in numbers] as part of their monthly on-going formation. Secondly on Feb. 11 to our BECs leaders [72 of them]. It was memorable and meaningful experience for them to be in this discernment. We are planning to extend this experience of God's Grace to other parishes of our Diocese.

We keep you all in our prayers. May God continue bless the good works he has done to us.

Fr. Melo was interviewed by me and my partner sa ginawa naming announcers' booth sa Archbishop's residence. Live kasi yong mga proceedings ng Catechism of Family and Life for 2010 elections. The name of my co-host on radio is Lita Bicol.

He concelebrated in the Mass presided over by Archbishop Ramon C. Arguelles.

Other pictures show him conversing with the other speaker, Linda Valenzona, who explained the Catechism which explained why pro-life should be the criteria for selecting candidates.

You will also see Fr. Melo delivering his talk and shared the CiDE experience. The emcee is Bro. Ito Guinahawa who was with me in Cebu. They ahd an open forum later on.
